How Many Disney Movies Are There? (2024)

There aren't many companies out there that have been around even nearly as long as Disney, given that the company was founded in 1923. A big reason for Disney's longevity is the success it has had in the film industry, producing animated and, shortly after, live-action content. To protect its name, The Walt Disney Company founded production companies like Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures to produce movies for a more mature audience.

We promise you'll have at least one song in your head after reading this.

As such, it can be a bit tricky to track down exactly how many movies Disney has produced for itself (or in collaboration with others). Given how long The Walt Disney Company has been around, though, the number of Disney-made movies probably shouldn't be that surprising.

Updated on March 12, 2024, by Tallis Spalding: Disney will not stop churning out movies, with more production studios being acquired and folded into the ever-growing corporation that is The Walt Disney Company. Of course, just because it is acquiring new things doesn't mean that it's not getting rid of or merging with other branches and companies.

Recently, the company decided to merge its Indian branch with Reliance, one of India's top conglomerate companies. This won't stop Disney from producing live-action and animated shows at an ever-astounding pace.

Disney Has Made 748 Movies

How Many Disney Movies Are There? (2)

There are 748 Disney movies, including everything from animated titles to live-action affairs. It doesn't matter if they were released in theaters, went straight to video and DVD, or were put exclusively on Disney Plus. As long as Disney produced and published them, they count. What we aren't counting as Disney films are co-productions, like Pixar and DreamWorks, or movies produced by subsidiaries like Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm.

However, films being produced by companies founded by Walt Disney Studios, like Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures, and international-only releases are being counted.

Disney's first release was the 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since then, they have regularly created, remade, and produced content for theater, home-to-video, and streaming releases. Of course, this large number probably means you haven't seen most of the Disney films outside of the main branch.

Disney's touch is far-reaching, with labels like Disneynature, Buena Vista International, and the aforementioned Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures. On average, that's around 8.7 movies per year.

Disney Has Made 121 Theatrical-Release Animated Movies

Including fully animated and partially animated, Disney has produced, helped to produce, and released 121 animated theatrical movies. Of course, this doesn't mean that the 627 remaining movies are completely live-action; this is just counting the ones released in theaters. There are plenty of direct-to-video or direct-to-streaming movies that simply didn't make the cut as a theatrical release and, thus, didn't make the cut in this count.

Disney Has Remade 16 Of Its Movies

Currently, Disney has 16 remakes in its collection. All of them have been either live-action or included photorealistic computer animation to mimic a live-action remake. This number only includes remakes of Disney's previously published works.

Some, like Cruella and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, are less so a remake and more so a new story, whereas others, like Maleficent, are re-tellings (we have opted to include re-tellings in this count). We have also opted to exclude sequels from remakes, given that the sequels, themselves, are not remakes.

Although some might view remakes as a new trend, Disney made its first remake in 1994 with Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

Pixar Has Made 27 Movies

Disney and Pixar are very closely associated, so it's interesting to look at how many animated movies the latter has made. Pixar has produced 27 movies, all of which were distributed through Disney. Pixar was purchased by Disney in 2006, but had been distributing movies through Disney before then. Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles were all produced prior to Disney's acquisition of Pixar. Under Disney, the studio has made 21 movies.

DreamWorks Has 12 Movies With Disney

Although DreamWorks is also well known for their own animated films, they've actually helped Disney make a handful of live-action films, like Lincoln, The Help, and I Am Number Four. It is important to note that DreamWorks Pictures is working with Disney on these live-action films, not DreamWorks Animations.

Marvel Studios Has Released 12 Movies Under Disney

Disney managed to get their hands on Marvel Studios on December 31, 2009. The first three films after the deal was made, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America, were already set to be distributed under Paramount Pictures. As such, the first actual "Disney" Marvel Cinematic Universe film was The Avengers in 2012.

Lucasfilm Has Released 6 Movies Under Disney

Even though Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney on October 30, 2012, less than three years after the acquisition of Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm has only produced six movies under Disney, beginning with an animated movie, Strange Magic, in 2015. The first live-action was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which also happened to be released in 2015.
