I’m pleased to share that The Manchester Metropolitan University is ranked 44 in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, placing us in the top 3% of ranked institutions globally. The Impact Rankings assess universities around the world against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), measuring institutions’ contributions to society through their research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching. Our result is testament to our collective efforts to embed sustainability at Manchester Met.#sustainability #universities

The Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) seeks to lead debate, dissemination and promotion of environmental science and sustainability and I'm delighted to have been re-elected as an IES Council member at the the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) AGM on 8 May. It has also been my pleasure to act as Chair for the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education (CEDHE) for the last four years. CEDHE is part of the IES family and seeks to inspire individuals to undertake a career in the environment, and to support students studying the environment and the academics who teach them. As the immediate past Chair, I'm delighted to welcome Dr Michelle Hale and Dr Alison Stokes as Chairs and Dr Naomi Holmes as Vice-Chair of CEDHE. Innovating Environmental Science Education - Less that 2 weeks to go!On Thursday 23 May 2024 we will be hosting the annual CEDHE (Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education) Forum. Our vision for the future of environmental science is one where environmental scientists are knowledgeable, skilled, diverse, trusted, and engaged in the process of transformation. It is one where people have access to the relevant science to help them solve environmental challenges and co-create a sustainable society where people and nature thrive. We will focus on three core themes linked to the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) Vision Statement: Education for Sustainable Development, Climate Anxiety and Optimism and Communicating Environmental Science. Each theme will form a session that will be explored by a provocation, followed by a workshop and presentation. The forum will give attendees the opportunity to participate in group discussions with colleagues about how different universities embed these core themes into their programmes.Members and non-members are welcome at this free event. Celebrating Children Without LimitsI have just spent an inspirational lunchtime celebrating Children Without Limits at The Manchester Metropolitan University. Each year, the Children Without Limits project supports approximately 500 local primary school children by inviting them onto campus every Saturday morning for extra lessons in mathematics and English. 120 students act as teachers and teaching assistants which also supports their own professional development. This year, as part of our role in the Department for Education National Education Nature Park project and working with National Education Nature Park, Carbon Literacy and Manchester Met/Royal Horticultural Society resources and Chester Zoo, we trained student teachers to deliver lessons to engage children with nature, then the students put the training into practice. The training led to a 67% increase in confidence in delivering lessons about improving biodiversity and the environment and a 72% increase in confidence in talking about this in a job interview. A student said, ‘I enjoyed learning about the different diverse wildlife in the UK and how I can teach children and inspire them to protect and nurture wildlife’. A pupil said the best part was ‘You actually get to be in nature after learning about it.’Huge thanks are due to Andrew Lenehan who leads Children Without Limits, Royal Horticultural Society, Sean Dick, Charlotte Smith, Gina Cavan, Liam Bluer, Cormac Lawler, Rachel Dunk, Rosie Naylor, Sam Hartley, Georgia and Remy Barrett (not least for the image) and most of all to the students and pupils.Prof. Janet Lord, Andrew Dainty,Professor Fiona Saunders, Saul Becker, Claire Moss.#Biodiversity #ClimateChangeFind out more about the National Education Nature Park here:https://lnkd.in/eqH2kghJ
